Land Clearing Services Available in Madison County
Fencerow work is most of the professional land clearing services in Madison County we run. Brush clearing on a half-mile of osage orange. Lot clearing for a Darby Township build. Tree clearing on a woodlot inside the bat window. Stump grinding at $4 an inch. Site clearing, site prep and grading for a machine shed. Underbrushing.
Our land clearing service removes trees and brush, grinds the stumps and leaves the field or the lot ready. Selective clearing keeps the bur oaks. Dirt work services run $160 an hour with an operator, pond footprint excavation included. Residential and commercial, both. Tree removal over a barn roof goes to a climber. No concrete or septic from a land clearing service.
Forestry Mulching on the Darby Plains: Fencerows Mulched in Place
Forestry mulching on the Darby Plains is fencerow mulching: honeysuckle, multiflora rose and autumn olive under a line of osage orange and dead ash. Our mulching services grind the undergrowth and the trees and branches to 8 inches where they stand. Osage orange, dead ash and hardwood over that we fell first; the wood is yours. The mulch lays two to four inches deep on the field edge.
Honeysuckle resprouts from the crown, so we grind the crown into the dirt and you spray the regrowth that summer. Callery pear on the old fields along US 42 gets cut-stump treatment within minutes. I have cleared honeysuckle since 2017 and fencerows here overgrow in two seasons once the mowing stops. Removing vegetation this way leaves a mulch layer, not a pile. We remove unwanted vegetation and keep the woodland you point at.
Lot Clearing for New Homes in Plain City and the Townships
The county wrote 404 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, and Plain City took 293 of them. Field case on the Union line: a half-acre lot in Plain City, honeysuckle and callery pear, one day with the skid steer, $2,500. Small residential lots like it are most of our residential jobs here. A quarter acre is $1,700 flat.
Residential land clearing west of there is a homeowner on 3 acres of Canaan Township pasture with a fencerow gone wild. Commercial land clearing is the I-70 corridor on the south side, where commercial development and master-planned communities take farm woodlots. The 300-hp mulcher goes to that commercial land. Property development starts with site preparation.

Soil, Season and Vegetation From Big Darby Creek to Madison Lake
Madison County's ground is Crosby, Kokomo and Brookston silt loam over till clay, the flattest farmland in Central Ohio, tiled end to end. On the till plain the tile lines know more than the survey does. Near Madison Lake it is swamp white oak and box elder woodland. Along Big Darby Creek and Little Darby it is sycamore bottoms with a hawthorn fence line on the agricultural land above.
Frozen, mud or dust, pick one. Kokomo flats hold standing water into May. I walked a lot off SR 38 last spring and the tile was running at 30 inches. Dead ash tops drop early, so we fell them first and keep the drainage ditches open for the cleanup.
Burn Rules, Wetlands and Permits Before You Clear
Burning land-clearing brush is out inside Plain City and the other villages. Ohio EPA OAC 3745-19 bars open burning inside corporation limits. In the townships the pile sits 1,000 feet from a neighbor's house with written notice to Ohio EPA, and ODNR Forestry bars daytime burning in spring and fall. So we mulch or haul.
A pad needs the Madison County Building Regulations permit plus a zoning certificate from the township: Darby, Canaan, Deer Creek, Union. Clearing on its own on acreage needs neither permit; farm use is exempt under ORC 519.21. At 1 acre of disturbance Madison SWCD reviews the erosion and sediment control plan. Those plans were my paperwork for fourteen years of pad work on I-71.
The Big Darby Accord and the Scenic River setback run the whole east side; the creek carries clubshell and riffleshell mussels. Kokomo flats can be isolated wetlands; Ohio EPA Level 1 covers fill to half an acre. Streams go to the USACE Huntington District. Trees over 3 inches on tracts over 1 acre come down October 1 to March 31 for the Indiana bat. OUPS 811 before any stump work; tile is not marked.
Frozen-Ground Land Clearing December to February
Frozen ground is the land clearing season on this flat till, December through February. The Kokomo clay sets up, the mulcher rides on top, no ruts and no mud surcharge. The bat window is open. Fields open after harvest in late October and close at planting, so fencerow work runs in between. Book December early.
