Land Clearing Services Available in Lorain County
The professional land clearing services in Lorain County we run most:
- Lot clearing for a build in Columbia or Eaton Township.
- Tree clearing of dead ash on wooded acreage, inside the Indiana bat window.
- Brush clearing on old pasture.
- Stump grinding, $4 an inch, $150 minimum.
- Site clearing, site prep and grading for a pad or a pond footprint.
- Underbrushing.
Our land clearing service removes trees and brush, grinds the stumps and stakes the lot. Selective clearing keeps the pin oaks. Dirt work services run $160 an hour with an operator, excavation included. Residential and commercial, both. Tree removal over a roof goes to a climber. No concrete, no wells, no septic from a land clearing service.
Forestry Mulching on Lake-Plain Clay: Dead Ash and Honeysuckle Mulched in Place
Forestry mulching here is dead ash over honeysuckle, with buckthorn in every wet thicket. Our mulching services grind the honeysuckle, multiflora rose, autumn olive and buckthorn, undergrowth and the trees and branches to 8 inches on the skid steer and 12 on the big machine. The mulch lays two to four inches deep and keeps the clay from turning to soup under the next rain.
Dead ash and hardwood over that we fell first; the tops drop early, and the wood is yours. Honeysuckle resprouts from the crown, so we grind the crown into the dirt; you spray the regrowth that summer. Buckthorn gets the same. I have cleared honeysuckle since 2017; these township lots overgrow in two seasons under the ash. Removing vegetation this way leaves no piles. We remove unwanted vegetation and keep the woodland you point at.
Lot Clearing for New Homes in North Ridgeville and Columbia Township
The county wrote 949 single-family permits in 2025 by the Census Building Permits Survey, third in Ohio, with North Ridgeville at 100 and Columbia Township at 257. Residential land clearing here is a homeowner on 2 acres off SR 83 with a swamp-forest edge of dead ash and a honeysuckle wall. Small residential lots run one day: half acre $2,500, quarter acre $1,700, plus transport.
Comparable job one county south: 6 acres of EAB-killed ash and honeysuckle in Medina County, February, frozen ground, two days with the 300-hp mulcher, $7,800. Commercial land clearing is the I-90 corridor, where commercial development and master-planned communities take farm woodlots. That commercial land gets the big machine. Site preparation is where property development starts, and residential jobs get the same list.
How Much Does Land Clearing Cost Here?
Land clearing in Lorain County costs $1,200 to $5,000 an acre, plus transport billed from Delaware. Honeysuckle and brush run $1,200 to 2,000 by density. A woodlot understory with dead ash runs $1,800 to 2,600. Full clearing to dirt with the stumps out is $2,800 to 5,000. The skid steer is $2,500 a day; the 300-hp mulcher is $3,900. Haul-off is $600 to 1,100 a load.
Site conditions set the price inside those ranges, and here that means water. March, April and May add a day or we wait. I walk the property myself, on-site, and the free quote follows. Call (740) 729-8625 or send the form with photos to get an estimate. The budget range is in your email before the end of the day.
Soil, Season and Vegetation From the Black River to Lake Erie
Lorain County's ground is Mahoning and Ellsworth lake-plain clay, the slowest-draining soil in Ohio, flat from the Black River to the Vermilion. Lake-plain clay drains the way a bank pays interest, slowly and on its own schedule. Near Lake Erie the woodland is red maple and pin oak swamp forest with buckthorn thickets. South toward Findley State Park it is beech and maple and a hawthorn fence line on the agricultural land.
Frozen, mud or dust, pick one, except here the mud runs into May. On our jobs in Columbia Township last winter the clay carried the big mulcher like a parking lot. In April it took a boot to the ankle. We keep the drainage swales open for the cleanup.
Burn Rules, Wetlands and Permits Before You Clear
Burning land-clearing brush is out inside Elyria, North Ridgeville and the villages. Ohio EPA OAC 3745-19 bars open burning inside corporation limits. In the townships the pile sits 1,000 feet from a neighbor's house with written notice to Ohio EPA, and ODNR Forestry bars daytime burning in spring and fall. So we mulch or haul.
A pad needs the Lorain County Building Department permit plus a zoning certificate from the township: Columbia, Eaton, Carlisle, Grafton. The cities run their own. Clearing alone on acreage needs neither; farm use is exempt under ORC 519.21. At 1 acre of disturbance the Lorain County Stormwater Management District and Lorain SWCD review the erosion and sediment control plan. On the I-71 pads I wrote those plans for fourteen years.
Lake-plain wet woods and vernal pools are isolated wetlands more often than not. Ohio EPA Level 1 covers fill to half an acre, and fill triggers it, not clearing; we flag and file with you. Streams go to the USACE Buffalo District in the Lake Erie basin. Trees over 3 inches on tracts over 1 acre come down October 1 to March 31 for the Indiana bat. OUPS 811 before any stump work.
Frozen-Ground Land Clearing December to February
Frozen ground is the only land clearing season I trust up here, December through February. The lake-plain clay sets up and carries the mulcher with no ruts and no mud surcharge, and the bat window is open. The Medina ash job ran two February days without a track. Book by Thanksgiving.
